Mac Tech Tip: Using iChat with Facebook Chat

Do you have a Mac and are you looking for an easier way to use Facebook Chat? If you're like me and you don't want to install a third-party chat client like Adium or AIM, you can use iChat to converse with your Facebook friends, through some Jabber mojo.  Here's how.

1) Go into iChat's preferences and set up a new account.  You'll want to select Jabber as the account type.

2) For your account name, you'll want to take a look at your vanity URL if you have one selected.  For example, my Facebook page URL is "facebook.com/classicyuppie", so my Facebook user name is "classicyuppie".  Then tack on "@chat.facebook.com" to the end of your user name, like this:

classicyuppie@chat.facebook.com

3) Enter your password for your Facebook account (the one you use to sign into Facebook.com

4) Now it's time to set some minor server preferences.  For the "server" you want to enter "chat.facebook.com".  The port information can get a bit confusing.  Enter "5222" as your port and make sure the box saying "Use SSL" is NOT checked.  This will enable TLS by default.

You should be good to go with using Facebook Chat within iChat now!  If you have any questions or problems, post them here and I'll do what I can to help you through it.
